The Tabernas Desert (Paraje Natural Desierto de Tabernas) is situated between the Sierra de los Filabres to the north and the Sierra de Alhamilla to the south-southeast and is isolated from the humid winds of the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its high elevation and inland location, this is a very dry area. It is considered to be the only real desert on the whole European continent. Tabernas was declared a Special Protected Area due to the presence of several endangered species of birds.
As well as the usual mediterranean species such as Habichtsadler, Schlangenadler, Felsenschwalbe, Uhu, Blaumerle, Alpensegler, Blauracke, Wiedehopf and Bienenfresser, the region hosts specialist desert birds like Wüstengimpel, Steinsperling, Sandflughuhn, Triel, Stummellerche, Haubenlerche, Theklalerche, Dupontlerche and Zwergtrappe.

The A92 Almeria to Guadix road bisects the area, as does the railway line from Almeria to Granada. The area around Oasis Alrededores is recommended for birders. There are very few hotels, restaurants or other amenities in the area. Take plenty of water, a charged mobile phone, and avoid exposure to hot weather.
The 9 km circular route indicated on the map is a popular route for people who want to see the landscapes of the Hollywood westerns. But also nice for birding. Note that the route is not very well marked and follows many dry riverbeds, so it's recommended to check the Birdingplaces map on your phone to avoid getting lost. There is almost no shade on this walk, so avoid the heat when doing this walk. Parking is available at Western Leones or Mini Hollywood.
