Laguna Baños de San José has water all year round unlike many other lagoons and lakes in the area that dry up in summer. This permanent lagoon is therefore very attractive for birds and also frequented by large numbers of waterfowl in winter. Among the birds you can encounter are Rothuhn, Rosaflamingo, Brandgans, Pfeifente, Löffelente, Spießente, Kolbenente, Moorente, Zwergtaucher, Schwarzhalstaucher, Purpurhuhn, Stelzenläufer, Rohrweihe, Drosselrohrsänger and Grauammer.

Otras pueden almacenar eventualmente un volumen considerable de agua y entonces surge una abundante vegetación acuática y marginal. Pero lo más característico de esta zona es la presencia de lagunas hipersalinas que confieren a este núcleo de humedales un interés ecológico indiscutible. Aunque el lecho de las lagunas más salinas se conserva casi inalterado, los cultivos que las rodean restringen y en algunos casos eliminan la vegetación marginal, amputando la sucesión vegetal propia de estos humedales.
