Beschreibung

The Natural Park of Ses Salines in the south of Ibiza is a great place for birdwatching. The salt production activity carried out in this area for hundreds of years has formed a unique landscape, a wetland where plenty of birds nest or stop during their migrations. Up to 210 species pass through Ses Salines each year. The lagoon of Estany des Cavallet is located south of the lagoons of Sal Rossa and Sant Francesc de S'Estany (both described on Birdingplaces) and also good for birding in Ses Salines. Very often close views of Rosaflamingo, Säbelschnäbler and Stelzenläufer.

Depending on the water levels in the different lagoons and pools you can see other bird species such as Seeregenpfeifer, Kiebitzregenpfeifer, Alpenstrandläufer, Zwergstrandläufer, Seidenreiher, Brandgans, Korallenmöwe, Turteltaube, Schwarzkehlchen, Samtkopf-Grasmücke, Girlitz, and Grünschenkel.

Zugang

Close to the airport and Ibiza-town. You can park on the parking of Platja des Cavallet. From the parking you can explore the area on foot. The east side of the lagoon has a nice trail along the shore (starting from the parking) with good views of the birds. The west side has a parallel road from where you can also see the birds very well. Note: you can make a circular walk (4 km), but the northern side of the lagoon only has a narrow road (the road that that leads to the beach of Platja des Cavallet) and can be busy when the beach guests arrive. This road has no space especially for pedestrians so if you walk this road please be careful. The southern shore is also a bit more difficult for birding. It borders a forest and is partly inaccessible and birds in the lagoon can be difficult to see. So you have the best views on the eastern and western shore. But if you prefer a circular walk, it is possible and it is a pleasant walk.
