Beschreibung
In Škocjanski Zatok Nature Reserve since 2001 a total of 259 different bird species have been recorded on this protected area of 122,7 hectares. Up to 50 species of breeding birds have been recorded at the reserve so far, although the exact number varies from year to year. There are two separate areas you can visit: a brackish lagoon and a freshwater marsh. In the brackish lagoon you can see birds like Zwergseeschwalbe, Flußseeschwalbe, Seeregenpfeifer, Säbelschnäbler and Stelzenläufer. The freshwater marsh offers an excellent breeding habitat for several species which are rare breeders in Slovenia, such as Zwergdommel, Wasserralle, Zistensänger and Purpurreiher, the latter nesting only here and nowhere else in the country. Also you can often see Zwergscharbe and Rohrweihe. The dense reedbeds and waterside bushes are occupied by many pairs of Schilfrohrsänger, Teichrohrsänger, Drosselrohrsänger and Seidensänger.
In winter the reserve hosts large numbers of waterbirds. Many ducks, geese and grebes, but also small flocks of Beutelmeise, Rohrammer and Bartmeise. The wet meadows are a favoured feeding area of Bekassine, Großer Brachvogel and Bergpieper. But there are many more birds you can encounter, see the birdlist below.
