Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain chain in mainland Portugal and Torre is its highest point. From this tremendous viewpoint, a brutal panorama is obtained over this whole landscape of valleys and rocks, in a mixture of shale and granite snaked by the blue of the water courses. Although above 1600 meters bird diversity drops, since trees are scarce or non-existent and landscape is barren and rocky, Torre is still a good place to observe, especially in summer, species like Wiesenweihe, Schwarzstorch, Gänsegeier, Kolkrabe, Feldlerche, Steinrötel, Steinschmätzer, Heckenbraunelle, Brachpieper and Bluthänfling. In the winter, most of the birds leave the highlands due to extreme cold and regular snowfall, but even at this time of the year it is worth coming to Torre for birdwatching, since only at this time of year is it possible to observe Alpenbraunelle, Ringdrossel, Wacholderdrossel and Schneeammer.
