Beschreibung
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Mittelmeermöwe, Heringsmöwe and Lachmöwe. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Regenbrachvogel, Steinwälzer, Sanderling and Flußuferläufer.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Flußseeschwalbe and Rosenseeschwalbe, but sometimes also Brandseeschwalbe.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Gelbschnabelsturmtaucher can be observed. Small numbers of Bulwersturmvogel can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Atlantiksturmtaucher and Barolosturmtaucher.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Ringschnabelmöwe, Polarmöwe and, in 2011, a Krabbenreiher.
