Beschreibung

The river Zacateligue flows through the city of Granada to Lake Nicaragua. At the mouth of the river Zacateligue, the river (which is actually more a small stream) flows into Lake Nicaragua. Adjacent to the river mouth you will find a very bird-rich wetland with shallow pools and beautiful large old trees standing in the water.

In the shallow pools (1) you can find Black-necked Stilt, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Jacana, Spotted Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Little Blue Heron, Southern Lapwing, Green Heron, Great Egret and Tricolored Heron.

Under the big trees (2) you can find Ringed Kingfisher, Amazon Kingfisher, Hoffmann's Woodpecker, Rufous-naped Wren, Montezuma Oropendola, Streak-backed Oriole and resting high up in the bare branches you can often see an Osprey perched.

Also check the river from the bridge (3) where you can often see Snowy Egret up close and Turquoise-browed Motmot on the electricity wires hanging over the water.

Zugang

The Zacateligue River Mouth is located in the beautiful city of Granada. From Granada it is easy to walk or cycle to the area. But if you arrive by car you can park on the side of the road in front of the wetland. Press P on the map for directions.

A circular walk is not possible, but you can walk around part of the area (see the map). How far depends on the water level of the lake. In any case, make sure you wear waterproof shoes. Note: Keep enough distance so that you do not disturb the birds too much, especially in the part of the shallow pools.
