Beschreibung

Rotoroa Island has undergone extensive ecological restoration. Thousands of pines were logged and replaced with native vegetation through large-scale planting efforts, supported by a dedicated network of volunteers. Now pest-free, the island offers a safe haven for native birds, reptiles, and invertebrates. In the island’s museum and exhibition centre visitors can and discover the island's special history as New Zealand's first and longest-running addiction treatment centre.

Soon after landing, you may spot South Island Takahe and Weka foraging on the lawns. A network of walking tracks leads through forest, wetlands, and beaches, offering the chance to see rare and reintroduced birds including Tīeke North Island Saddleback, Whitehead, New Zealand Bellbird, and Pāteke Brown Teal. Overnight accommodation is available, giving you the opportunity to see the North Island Brown Kiwi, for which the island serves as a a crèche, or hear the Grey-faced Petrel returning after dark. Along the beaches, look out for New Zealand Dotterel and Variable Oystercatcher as well as Tara White-fronted Tern.

On the way to the island look for Little Penguin, Australasian Gannet, and Fluttering Shearwater, maybe even Spotted Shag when you pass Waiheke.
