Beschreibung

The Mt. Fyffe Forest Walk goes through one of the only places near Kaikōura which was never milled for timber. About 45 minutes into the walk there is a section with trees which are as much as 800 years old, quite old for NZ. There are many old miro, mataī, tōtara, and rimu to see, which shelter many kererū (New Zealand Pigeon), tūī (Tui), ngirungiru (Tomtit)and korimako (New Zealand Bellbird).

It's a good stretch for the legs, as well as a superb way to see good examples of ancient New Zealand podocarp-hardwood forests, various forest birds, and also the difference in forest vitality when it is protected from grazing mammals or it is not (the beginning of the walk goes along a narrow strip of re-wilded forest next to a fenced-off paddock, where all of the undergrowth has been grazed by cattle and there is no forest understory).
