Beschreibung

Ikhes Nuur is a lake in western Mongolia, nestled at an elevation of about 1,600 meters in a high-altitude landscape with steppe. The lake is in a flat area (after having climbed down from a plateau) giving a great view on the breeding grounds of the Relict Gull. There is a little lake a bit to the south where you can get closer to the shore and observe the gulls and many other bird species.

There is an abundance of birds here. Birds you can observe include Avocet, Gull-billed Tern, Terek Sandpiper, Black-tailed Godwit (Melanuroides), Common Swift, Barn Swallow, White Wagtail, Northern Wheatear, Hill Pigeon, Citrine Wagtail, Arctic Warbler, Common Shelduck, Ruddy Shelduck, Bar-headed Goose and Swan Goose. But the real reason we came to this remote lake was the Relict Gull, one of the earth's rarest gulls, visible on their breeding grounds.

Zugang

Ikhes Nuur (also spelled Ihes Nuur) is located in the Govi-Altai Province of western Mongolia, near the small town of Darvi. It is admittedly a long journey out there, about 500 km from our last camp at Böön (Boon) Tsagaan Nuur in Bayankhongor province. If you have the time, it is absolutely worth it. There is a paved road until about 100 km west of the city of Altaj, where you have to leave it for the last 50 km or so to cross the Daryiyn Nuruu mountain range to get to the village of Darvi, situated at the lake. 4x4 is required.
