Beschreibung
Parque Ecológico de Xochimilco was created from cornfields 20 years ago. It comprises a big shallow lake, rough grassland, tree‑lined canals and ponds. Close to the visitor centre the park is landscaped and manicured to appeal to leisure visitors, but it has been left to grow wild further out. Almost 300 species of birds have been observed in the park, with more than 100 regularly recorded.
Six species of heron are present most of the year. In winter, the lake hosts varying numbers of northern waders, ducks and a small population of American White Pelican. Other species of wader occur on spring and autumn passage, notably Baird's Sandpiper and Wilson's Phalarope. Resident passerines include Cassin's Kingbird, Vermilion Flycatcher, Curve-billed Thrasher, Loggerhead Shrike, Song Sparrow and Canyon Towhee. Other birds that can be spotted include Belted Kingfisher, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Grey Silky-flycatcher, grackles, hummingbirds, birds of prey and 15 species of ducks.
