Beschreibung

Bird watching along the Camino San Felipe is interesting because all kinds of birds can pop up here. In the open fields, low shrubs and on the electricity wires that run along the road the birds are often very visible. There are also some wet areas along the road and patches of mangroves. The traffic on the road is not too busy, although you have to watch it, because some people drive fast and sometimes very large trucks pass by. Unfortunately, the real disadvantage, is the lack of comfortable parking spots. The places where you have enough space to park and watch birds are scarce.

Having said that, the birding can be excellent. In the wetter parts you can spot herons, waders, rails, Wood Stork and White Ibis. In the drier parts you can observe birds like Vermilion Flycatcher, Yucatan Bobwhite, Ruddy Ground Dove, Groove-billed Ani, Mexican Sheartail, Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Yucatan Woodpecker, Crested Caracara and Laughing Falcon.

Zugang

Rio Lagartos and San Felipe are located on the northernmost tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. From Cancun or Merida it is a 3 hours drive. From Valladolid 1 1/2 hours on mostly very good roads. Buses are plentiful and inexpensive from both Cancun, Merida, Valladolid and Tizimin. The Camino San Felipe connects both towns and is 8 km long. The road is in excellent condition and you can also explore the road by bike or on foot. But do pay close attention to the traffic, because even though it is usually not very busy, the cars that drive here often drive quite fast.
