Palm Islands Nature Reserve used to host many breeders in the past. Today, due to high levels of disturbance (many tourists visit the island via a boat shuttle) only the Mittelmeermöwe still breeds on the island. Today, the island remains an excellent site for monitoring the large migration of waterbirds as well as well as potential observation and/or ringing of passerine migrants. The site is also interesting for wintering seabirds.
Birds that can be observed in the area include Kormoran, Rosapelikan, Knäkente, Graureiher, Stelzenläufer, Lachmöwe, Heringsmöwe, Weißstorch, Bergpieper, Bachstelze, Zitronenstelze, Gebirgsstelze, Brandseeschwalbe, Kiebitz, Flußseeschwalbe, Weißflügel-Seeschwalbe, Flußregenpfeifer, Rallenreiher, Schwarzstorch, Pfeifente and Mittelmeer-Sturmtaucher.

To get to Palm Islands Nature Reserve, you have to take a boat from the harbour of the city of Tripoli. Boat shuttles are available during tourist season and might not be available during migration season. For access during bird migration, it might be necessary to communicate with local authorities or tourism offices.
