The Fondo Toce Nature Reserve, established in 1990, includes the last part of the River Toce as it enters Lake Maggiore, and part of the lake shore. This wetland of about 30 hectares has reed beds, willow thickets and open water. The area is important for the reproduction of fishes and for migratory and breeding birds. More than 130 bird species have been recorded in the area. Among the birds you can encounter are Haubentaucher, Kormoran, Eisvogel, Höckerschwan, Knäkente, Kolbenente, Zwergtaucher, Wasserralle, Teichrohrsänger and Drosselrohrsänger. Gänsesäger can be observed here almost year round. In late summer you can see spectacular flocks of swallows in the reed beds.
