Beschreibung

Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary is a huge expanse of shallow water and mudflats southwest of Ahmedabad, in the dry plains of Gujarat. The area spreads out over roughly 120 square kilometres in the monsoon and winter months. In the dry season it contracts into a mosaic of pools, exposed mud, and grassy islands.

In winter the sanctuary is a great destination for birdwatching. Big flocks of flamingos and pelicans can be observed and the shallows fill with ducks, waders, cranes, and small shorebirds. Birds you can see include Sarus Crane, Demoiselle Crane, Common Crane, Grey-headed Swamphen, Knob-billed Duck, Garganey, Black-winged Stilt, Kentish Plover, Marsh Sandpiper, Greater Painted-snipe, Little Pratincole, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Greater Flamingo and Lesser Flamingo.

Zugang

Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary is located about sixty kilometres southwest from Ahmedabad. Road travel is the only practical way to reach the area. The sanctuary is typically visited as a day excursion due to limited public transport and accommodation options. The best way to explore the area is by boat. Press P on the map for directions to the point where the boats leave.

Hours for visiting the lake are 6:00 am to 5:30 pm. There is an entry fee per visitor and per camera, however for boating one needs to negotiate with the local boatmen, though prescribed rates are mentioned at the gate. The best time to start is just before sunrise as the lake is calm and quiet with flock of birds waiting for their regular food.
