Beschreibung

The Apaj area is a huge sodic lowland of the great Hungarian Plain. This area is only 60 Km from Budapest and it's part of the Upper Kiskunsag Puszta. It hosts large masses of birds during migration. It presents a nice variation of sodic meadows and grazing lands. The reconstruction of the former fish ponds outside the village of Apaj resulted in the creation of a large wetland. The large open steppes are good foor seeing many birds of prey. You can also see birds of reed beds and saline habitats and other wildlife of saline steppes. One of the largest Hungarian populations of Großtrappe lives here and a large number of Rotflügel-Brachschwalbe nest in the area. Also other spectacular birds like Kaiseradler and Blauracke can be seen. Best time to visit in spring, early summer and autumn, when large numbers of birds can be found in the wetlands.

Zugang

Many trails possible to explore. For example the 1-km long Apaj duck trail (see blue dotted line on the map) which goes along a wetland created from a former fishpond. There is a high-stand at both trailheads, offering great views on the puszta. The trail is east of Apaj, and can be accessed from the road heading for the road connecting Bugyi and Kunpeszér. The trail is accessible on foot, throughout the year. But you can explore the area on many other and longer trails. See for more info the website of the National Park (link below).
