Lake Almyros is one of the most important wetlands of western Crete. In the lake you can find many aquatic birds. The lake is not only worth a visit for waterfowl. In Georgioupoulis I found the largest Rauchschwalbe roost I have seen so far! Among the other birds you can encounter are Grünschenkel, Bruchwasserläufer, Bekassine, Flußuferläufer, Waldwasserläufer, Eisvogel, Alpensegler, Seidenreiher, Mittelmeermöwe, Stieglitz, Italiensperling and Seidensänger.

You can reach the lake from the town when following the road "Palea EO Chanion Rethimnou". The Rauchschwalbe roost is at the opposite position of the town.
