Very nice cliff area with great species and thé place for Maskengrasmücke on Lesvos!
Kavaki is located between Molivos and Petra and consists of high cliffs with scrubs and scattered trees overlooking the ocean. The location is known by lots of birders by one species of breeding bird: the Maskengrasmücke. Its a typical bird of scrubby areas and can be spotted on top of mainly scrubs and small bushes; especially in spring when maintaining its territory. The road between the two cities has multiple lay-bys from which you can overlook the scrubby areas (see observation points on map).
The Maskengrasmücke is not the only species that this location can provide. Other common species, like Maurensteinschmätzer, Grauortolan and Weißbart-Grasmücke, can also be seen very regularly. Another good species for this area is the Samtkopf-Grasmücke. They tend to stay in the same habitat and scrubs as the Maskengrasmücke.
The rocky areas just next to the steep cliffs are a very good spot for Blaumerle and Wanderfalke. Look for pointy rocks covered in feaces. Often, these species tend to come back to the same rocks.
Just North of the OXY club (see map) a small track up the hill is located. The scrubby area is also a good spot for Maskengrasmücke and Samtkopf-Grasmücke.
Overlooking the ocean, you can also find flocks of gulls and shearwaters, like Mittelmeermöwe, Mittelmeer-Sturmtaucher and sometimes Gelbschnabelsturmtaucher. Look for fishing vessels that return to the harbour near Petra. They tend to follow these vessels for a long time!
The cliffs give you also a good overview for migrants, like songbirds and raptors. Adlerbussard and Schlangenadler tend to hang around the area, but most of the time quickly return to the fields east towards Perasma.
The area is very easy accessable due to the road between Molivos and Petra. There are multiple lay-bys which can be used to overlook the scrubby areas for species like Maskengrasmücke.
