A renatured area of former and still active quarry ponds surrounded by riparian forest. Despite of the size a great variety of breeders are attracted.
Navigation is quite simple: Follow the small road northwards from the car park. Soon afterwards you can look on a shallow pond. On its shoreline regularly common wader species like Flußregenpfeifer, Bruchwasserläufer and others can be observed. Schwarzmilan and Rohrweihe are soaring often above the area.
If you continue on this road you're approaching the railway. Shortly before the crossing a way leads westwards. The reeds there hold Rohrschwirl and Drosselrohrsänger. According to the sign posts it is apparently allowed to walk on it, but it leeds to the local gravel pit, so be careful and respect possible future changes. Where the reeds turn into bushes and riparian forest you can expect Alpenbirkenzeisig, Nachtigall, Pirol, Kuckuck and Grauspecht. Graureiher breed in the area, but out of sight from the public paths. In recent years single Purpurreiher have tried to breed as well, in most years in mixed pairs. So pay attention to overflying herons!
The path immediately north of the railway crossing would lead directly to an observation hide, which overlooked a pond with interesting shallow-waterzones and was surrounded by riparian forest. In the evening hours it had been a good place for Nachtreiher. However, as of 2024 the last part of the path is closed for public. The same counts for the path leading eastwards along the shoreline of the activ quarry ponds.
From the southwestern shore of the largest pond you have at least good chances to encounter with the key species, the only breeding pair of Flußseeschwalbe in Upper Franconia. Pay there furthermore attention to Uferschwalbe and Mittelmeermöwe. Out of the scrubs around the ponds Sumpfrohrsänger, Blaukehlchen and sometimes Feldschwirl are singing. Sadly, it's currently not possible to get to the lake in the northeast, because the sandbanks were attractive for resting waders in the past years. Hopefully, the path will be opened in the future again!
Leave the motorway A 73 at "Dreieck Lichtenfels" and follow the B 173. Immediately befor reaching the village Trieb, turn left to the "Autohaus Amon". There is no official car park.
The best way to access the site by public transport is maybe taking the train to Michelau in Oberfranken. From here a cycle path leads you straight to the area (distance 1,5 km).
