The Scharpenacken area is characterized by diverse, small landscape structures and large open spaces, which, as part of the Wuppertal southern heights, offer wide views. The Scharpenacken is about 60% forested, the rest of the area is open land. The area is a protected landscape and is home to several valuable biotopes, including the Schmalenhofer Bach, a near-natural low mountain stream, pastures, ponds and hedges. Since the area was used by the military for a long time, the forest has hardly been managed and contains a lot of dead wood, which attracts many birds. Among the birds you can encounter are Baumpieper, Mittelspecht, Buntspecht, Grünspecht, Schwarzspecht, Waldkauz, Mäusebussard, Gartenrotschwanz and Kleiber.

Zugang
Scharpenacken is located 3 km southeast of Wuppertal. From Wuppertal City Center: Drive east via the L418 and take the exit towards Scharpenacker Weg. Follow the signs to the parking areas or press P on the map for directions. Public Transport: Take bus line 620 or 630 from Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof (main train station) to the stop “Scharpenacker Weg.” From there, it’s a short walk to the main entrance of the area. There are several trails to explore the area.
