Fields and woodland near the village of Utecht with the only wild population of Greater Rhea (Nandu) birds in Europe.
In the early 2000s some Greater Rhea escaped from a farm in the area. Since then they have survived and even thrived with reportedly up to 500 birds living in the fields and woodland around the nature reserve of Kammerbruch and the village of Utecht. Exploring the area often yields views of these flightless birds. Other birds you can encounter are Graureiher, Kranich, Rohrweihe, Mäusebussard, Sturmmöwe and Kolkrabe.
Limited parking but the roads aren't busy. Take care not to block any field entrances when stopping your car.
