Beschreibung

The Goldbergsee is a detention basin, separated into 3 sections. The southern part is filled with water throughout the year. The water here stays open most time of the winter, so it is good for hibernating waterfowl like Gänsesäger in bigger amounts. The middle part is emptied during winter, large mud surfaces then. Resting trees for Kormoran.

The northern part is designed as a biotope. Water during the whole year, but shallow and quickly freezing during winter. Shallow with small mud surfaces and extended reed areas. Good place for breeding, resting and (when there's no ice) hibernating waterfowl, migrating shorebirds and marsh terns, like Trauerseeschwalbe, in smaller numbers. But often interesting diversity, almost all european heron species documented as visitors, breeding Acrocephalus warblers, Blaukehlchen, Braunkehlchen and Schwarzkehlchen.

Important Bird Area for grassland birds "Glender Wiesen" north of Goldbergsee with important Bekassine population for whole Upper Franconia.

Goldberg, a small forest on the hill between biotope and southern part of Goldbergsee with chances on Grauspecht and Mittelspecht.

By car: Take road St2205 from Coburg towards Bad Rodach, parking lot between Coburg and Beiersdorf at the right side of the road, directly at the west side of Goldbergsee. Click on the P in the map to get directions to the parking.

Public transport: By train till Coburg Main Station, then bus line 5 to Beiersdorf. Leave at "Beiersdorf Veilchenweg" or better, if possible, at "Beiersdorf Abzweig Callenberg":

There`s a very comfortable, partly paved way for walking, cycling or inlineskating between the middle and the northern biotope lake sections with an observation platform. The way should also be possible with wheelchair, but not stepping up the stairs to the platform top.
