Beschreibung

The Eschefelder Teiche are a nature reserve located 30 km south of Leipzig. The area consists of 8 ponds and covers an area of 270 hectares. The ponds were artificially created in the 18th century for fishing. The largest pond is the pond near Eschefeld. The ponds are an important feeding, breeding and resting area for numerous waterfowl species. The surrounding area is mainly used for agriculture. On the edge of the large pond there is the Naturschutzstation (nature conservation station) Teichhaus. It is run by NABU (BirdLife Germany) and also has a restaurant. On the banks of the large pond on the artificially created dam you can find a bird hide.

The area has a Lachmöwe colony on the largest of the 8 lakes. In the noisy colony Schwarzhalstaucher and Schwarzkopfmöwe also find shelter. The most important breeding birds include Rohrdommel and Zwergdommel, Rohrweihe, Drosselrohrsänger, Beutelmeise, Bartmeise, Nachtigall and Blaukehlchen. All these species are best observed between April and early June. Depending on the season ducks like Knäkente, Kolbenente, Schellente, Gänsesäger, Löffelente, Brandgans and Spießente can be seen.

During migration periods, other species arrive. Fischadler and Seeadler are regular guests who prey on food in the waters. There are also Trauerseeschwalbe as well as Zwergmöwe. Another interesting group during migration is resting waders. These include Kiebitz, Flußregenpfeifer, Sandregenpfeifer, Bekassine, Grünschenkel, Flußuferläufer, Bruchwasserläufer, Rotschenkel and Kampfläufer. Sometimes rare birds like Graubrust-Strandläufer, Teichwasserläufer and Odinshühnchen are observed.
