Beschreibung
The Borkener See with its nutrient-poor body of water forms the core of one of the largest and most important nature reserves in Germany, which primarily serves as a resting area for numerous rare bird species. Due to its large body of water and its mild climate, it remains ice-free for a long time. A total of 235 bird species have been observed here since 1990. Sterntaucher and Prachttaucher are regularly seen. As are Kranich, Tundrasaatgans, Bläßgans, Samtente, Mittelsäger and Zwergsäger. Also rare guests such as Zwerggans, Rotfußfalke, Steinwälzer, Thorshühnchen, Odinshühnchen, Weißbart-Seeschwalbe and Weißflügel-Seeschwalbe can be seen here. On good days, up to 2,000 ducks and just as many seagulls can be seen on the lake.
