Beschreibung

The Kotu Creek and the nearby water ponds act as a magnet for birds, especially in the dry season (October - June). But there is also plenty to see in the wet season. The creek is located within walking distance of the hotels on the Kotu strip. Along the Kotu Creek and along the paths through the surrounding rice fields (see the map) you can easily find birds like Black Heron, African Spoonbill, Long-tailed Cormorant, Abyssinian Roller, Malachite Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, Senegal Parrot, Pied Crow, Laughing Dove, Wattled Lapwing and many, many more! From October to March you can also see many waders and other migratory birds from Europe in the area.

The Kotu Creek Bridge is the place to be if you want to hire a good birdguide. The Gambia is excellent for visiting independently, but an expert bird guide can be of added value to spot less easily found species such as the Pearl-spotted Owlet. And by hiring a local birdwatching guide you avoid being constantly approached by locals who offer their services as a 'guide' in order to earn a little extra. At the Kotu Bridge you will find the Gambia Bird Watcher Association where you can find excellent and reliable guides (see map and link).
