Luitemaa Nature Reserve is a wetland complex on the south-western coast of Estonia that consists of diverse coastal and inland habitats including shallow sea, capes and islands, coastal meadows and reed-beds. The coastal meadows near Võiste have shallow waters that attract large amounts of dabbling ducks (Schnatterente, Stockente, Knäkente, Pfeifente, Krickente and so on), Brandgans and swans. The wide coastal meadows and lagoons are favored by geese. Most common are Graugans and Weißwangengans. Rarer gooses like Bläßgans, Kurzschnabelgans, Kanadagans, Rothalsgans, Ringelgans, Tundrasaatgans and Saatgans are often found during migration.
The sandbanks and lagoons are great spots for wading birds. Most common breeding birds are Rotschenkel, Sandregenpfeifer, Austernfischer, Goldregenpfeifer, Kiebitz, and Kampfläufer. During migration Dunkler Wasserläufer, Säbelschnäbler, Alpenstrandläufer, Zwergstrandläufer, Temminckstrandläufer, Knutt, Sichelstrandläufer, Großer Brachvogel and Regenbrachvogel have been recorded.
