Beschreibung

Unlike the east side of Lake Neusiedl, the west side is not part of the National Park and there are no soda pools. However, Breitenbrunn is increasingly visited by birders because it offers the possibility to observe reed birds and because of the chance to spot rarities during migration.

Along the road through the reed belt, you will find a small observation tower where you may see (or mainly hear, especially in spring) Wasserralle, Kleines Sumpfhuhn, Beutelmeise, Bartmeise, and different reed warblers. Following the small path through the reed further down the road increases your chances of sightings. At the mud basin next to the Seebad (the smaller loop on the map) you may spot different waders, herons and gulls depending on the water level. There is no hide here so be attentive not to disturb the birds. During breeding season, the access to this part of the itinerary is restricted.

The Seebad itself is a great place for spotting birds during autumn migration or in winter. Depending on the water level of the lake, you may find mud areas next to the shore or further out around the islets. Here you may observe migratory waders such as Flußregenpfeifer, Kampfläufer, Alpenstrandläufer, Flußuferläufer, Waldwasserläufer, Rotschenkel, Bruchwasserläufer, Dunkler Wasserläufer, Grünschenkel. The harbour and open lake are good for spotting different ducks or grebes with more species diversity in winter. Of note, several Schneeammer have been recorded at the Seebad for several consecutive days in Jan/Feb 2020 as well as in Dec 2022. Below you can find a link to the complete species list observed at this location (in German language but including scientific names).
