Beschreibung
Traditional draw-wells and reed huts, cattle herds, families of geese, blossoming orchids in spring, and extensive salt efflorescences in summer are popular photo motifs.
From an ornithological point of view, the Illmitzer Zicksee (also known as the "Zicklacke") is certainly a “must-see”. At high water levels, a number of places offer good opportunities to observe birds at very close range. During the course of the year, about 15 duck species and 30 wader species use the lake or its shore zone as a resting area, and Schnatterente, Löffelente, and Stockente breed here. In May and July/ August, this saline lake is the most reliable spot in the area to see Sumpfläufer , Temminckstrandläufer , and Zwergstrandläufer. It is also a good place to see: Wiesenschafstelze , Schilfrohrsänger , Rohrschwirl , Neuntöter , and Rohrammer. Singing pearches for Haubenlerche and Sperbergrasmücke are almost “common knowledge”.
