Cairns Esplanade

Cairns  >  Australia

While it may not look it, the Cairns intertidal mudflats are an important stopover on the East Australasian Flyway.

Beschreibung

Cairns Esplanade has easy access and the opportunity to get great views of shorebirds much closer then you would normally. Different species favour different ends but its a pleasant stroll or a quick drive from end to end. Do listen out for Mangrove Robin and Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove if parking at the northern end. Its been host to many an interesting vagrant with a Nordmann's Greenshank being the latest that has returned for the last 4 years (2023) to spend the summer in the tropics.

Zugang

Parking is easiest at the northern end and free whereas at the southern end it can be busier and requires using a parking meter as its within the Cairns CBD. Click on a P in the map for directions or coordinates. You can walk the whole length (about 2 km) or drive and park at different spots along as needed. There is a cafe midway along that is good for refreshments and there are plenty of toilets. The path and boardwalks are flat and wheelchair accessible.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Well worth a visit and on most peoples radar if they are visiting Cairns or just passing through. Summer is best for waders as they are avoiding the northern hemisphere winter.

The esplanade is long (about 2 km) so take it easy and factor in the heat and shade availability. An incoming tide late afternoon is usually the most plesant as the buildings throw shade and you arent staring at the sun. See the link to the tide table below.
