This is a water treatment plant for the surrounding area but has been purposefully developed as a wetland area for resident and migratory wading birds.
At Byron Wetlands there are 4 main ponds spread across an approximately 100ha area and there is a bird hide overlooking the largest pond. There are grassed footpaths to take you past or around each of the ponds. There is also a lightly forested area and some open ground. There is a small parking area but it is never full and the place is quiet. The place tends to be only visited by birders. The birds you see will of course depend on the time of day and time of year. There are over 200 species listed on the website for the area and include waders, birds of prey, forest birds, reed birds, ducks, etc.
If visiting in the evening, there is (can be) a beautiful sunset over the ponds. The area is off the Byron Bay industrial area, which is made up of mostly commercial shops (food, homewares, home renovation, clothing, pet) as opposed to heavy industry. The heavily tourist town of Byron Bay is a few minutes further away. Also nearby (10 mins drive) is Flat Rock, between Lennox Head and Ballina. This is a great area for spotting waders and other sea-birds. Best in early morning.
You will need to get to Byron Wetlands by car or bicycle if you are staying in the nearby tourist resorts. There is no public transport. There is a parking spot for about 10 or so cars. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. Exploring the area is on foot.
IMPORTANT: A visitor permit is required and must be applied for in advance. This can be done at: https://www.byron.nsw.gov.au/Services/Water-and-sewer/Byron-Bay-Wetlands, see clickable link below.
Residents of the shire and surrounding areas can get an access card to enter at any time.
