Beschreibung

Big Swamp has been identified as a wetland of national significance. It is divided into three natural basins. The central basin is permanent, whilst the north and south basins are temporary. Habitats include Sedgeland with Smooth Cutting-grass (Gahnia filum) and woodland dominated by River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) around the margins. Big Swamp has only one access point with a bird hide, the rest of the area can only be seen from the main road. Note that the number of birds depends heavily on the water level. Parts of the area, especially the northern and southern basin, can dry up.

Almost 120 bird species have been recorded. Common species that can be observed are Cape Barren Goose, Black Swan, Hoary-headed Grebe, Australian Shelduck, Chestnut Teal, White-faced Heron, Pied Stilt, Australian Ringneck and Galah. Less Common species are Freckled Duck, Australasian Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Banded Stilt, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Swamp Harrier and New Holland Honeyeater.
