Beschreibung

The Aroona Dam Sanctuary offers spectacular views and has a 5.5 km interpretive walk, which starts below the main wall of the 5000 megalitre dam. The trail traverses wetlands below the dam, mountainous terrain, rocky outcrops and red-gum lined creeks. In the past this was the water supply for residents of Leigh Creek. Birdlife abounds and other wildlife makes use of the plentiful water supply, so unusual in this normally arid environment.

The dam is no longer used as a water supply, and is a nice place to watch birds, with a good variety of wildlife and more than 100 bird species recorded to date. Common species of the area are Musk Duck, Hoary-headed Grebe, White-plumed Honeyeater, Australian Magpie, Striated Pardalote and Chestnut-rumped Thornbill. Less Common Species are Rainbow Bee-eater, Peaceful Dove, Hooded Robin, Red-capped Robin and Southern Whiteface.
