Large remote commercial forest mostly at 3/400 metres, surrounds the Usk reservoir. Good for churring Natravn and roding Skovsneppe on summer evenings.

Description

Glasfynydd Forest has mostly moorland and woodland species eg Vestlig Sortstrubet Bynkefugl, Dalrype, Rødstjert, Dobbeltbekkasin, Enkeltbekkasin, Dværgfalk, Tårnfalk and Rød Glente. In winter Stor Tornskade, Lille Korsnæb, Dompap, Grønsisken and Lille Gråsisken. Few birds on the reservoir but Krikand, Fiskehejre and Stor Skallesluger possible. Vandstær and Bjergvipstjert below the dam. For Natravn, look for a recently felled forest area with regrowth of bracken, bramble etc - only active after dark between May and August.

Access

From Swansea take A4067 Tawe valley road then left two miles beyond Danyrogof caves. From A40 Brecon/Llandovery road, turn south from Trecastle. Buses through Trecastle regularly. Train station at Llandovery. The circular walk around the reservoir is 8 km.
