The largest island of Turkey is located in the Northern Aegean Sea. A unique place with rich habitats for birds and great touristic attractions for birders.
The island Gökçeada (Imbros) is a nice touristic location but also offers rich bird diversity in a small area. It is good place to observe birds which prefer different habitats. Stor Flamingo, Turteldue and Sortstrubet Sanger are some species that are possible to observe in the island. At the same time, on the coasts and during the ferry trip to the island Skopolis Skråpe is the one of the most attractive species to observe.
The island is only accessible via car ferry from Kabatepe (Çanakkale). When you reach the island, you can travel across the island by car. It is the best way to explore the different habitats in a short time. Public transport is on the island is limited and focussed on connecting the beaches to the city center. There are car rental companies on the island, but you need to check availability beforehand. The roads reach to most of the birding spots but on some locations you will have to walk. Find the details on map.
The island looks small but it takes time to get around. Take at least 2 days to explore the island.
