Description

Helgumsjön Fågeltornet is a bird observation tower located in the Helgumssjöns Delta, a large area adjacent to the river Faxälven outlet in lake Helgumssjön. The area has numerous water-related biotopes, but also deciduous forests, coniferous forests and open agricultural land. Best time for birding in the area is in spring and early summer. But late summer and autumn can still be very good.

Helgumsjön Fågeltornet can be best visited in the morning when the light conditions are best. In April, the ice breakup begins with an increasingly large gap forming where the river Faxälven flows into lake Helgumsjön. Here, seabirds gather in anticipation of continued ice melting in the delta. From the northern part of the village of Rådom, you walk down across the meadows to the edge of the beach, where you get a very good overview of the increasingly large area. Sangsvane, Canadagås, several duck species, Toppet Lappedykker, Nordisk Lappedykker Svaleklire and Hættemåge are the earliest to arrive. The ice inside will soon disappear. During May and June, the bird life is at its most intense. Then you get the best overview from the bird observation tower. Resting Havlit, Bjergand, grebes and Sortand can then be seen, as well as all three species of woodpeckers. Most years a large colony of Hættemåge is present. Sangsvane can usually be seen breeding. Spring is the best time to see waders. The area closest to the bird observation tower consists partly of forest, partly of overgrown moist meadowland and is interesting for close views of Nattergal, Blåhals, Flodsanger, Gulbug and Karmindompap.

Other parts of the Helgumssjöns Delta are also worth a visit when you are in the area: the northern part of Mosjön, the agricultural lands between Gagnet and Holmstrand, and Orrvågen.

Access

From Sollefteå road 87 west about 15 km to Österforse. Turn right on road 331 towards Ramsele ("Bävervägen"). After just under 4 km, the bridge over the Faxälven's outlet from Lake Helgumsjön is passed. Then continue on the eastern side of the lake about 9.5 km to the village of Rådom. From the road you can now see the outlet of the Faxälven in the lake, and the delta area spreads to the northwest. Continue about another km to a large parking pocket on the west side of the road. Click on the P in the map for directions. From the parking a small path leads down to the Helgumsjön bird observation tower.
