Description

Big lagoon between the city of Negombo and the sea. The only way to see the Negombo Lagoon properly is a visit by boat. Although the lagoon is largely enclosed by the city of Negombo, you will have a surprisingly nice nature experience if you enter the lagoon by boat. On the mudflats and in the mangroves in the northern part of the lagoon you can observe thousands of birds. Besides an incredible amount of Little Egret you can spot birds such as Asian Openbill, Oriental Darter, Little Cormorant, Indian Cormorant, Spot-billed Pelican, Striated Heron, Medium Egret, Great Egret, Purple Heron, Black-headed Ibis and Brahminy Kite.

Access

The Negombo Lagoon is located directly behind the fishing port of Negombo. Near the bridge over the Hamilton canal (see star on the map) you will find numerous boats that can provide a boat trip through the lagoon. But almost all hotels also offer this boat trip. A two-hour trip is enough to explore the northern part of the lagoon. Prices vary enormously and depend on where and from who you buy a ticket. We have been offered tickets from $15 per person, but also for $100 (which is of course way too much).
