Description

The Laguna de la Encanyissada is the largest lagoon in the Ebro Delta, with an area of 1192 hectares. The Encanyissada is connected to the sea through the San Pedro channel. It is the most salty seawater inlet in the Ebro Delta. On the northern side of the lagoon there are several viewpoints and platforms, where you can observe the birds that inhabit the lagoon. Among the birds you can observe are many ducks, herons, waders, terns and gulls and many other nice birds. For example Rødhovedet And, Hvidskægget Terne, Dværghejre, Sultanhøne, Vandrikse, Lille Lappedykker, Drosselrørsanger, Savisanger, Rørhøg, Sort Ibis, Nathejre, Tophejre, Stylteløber, Hvidklire and Tinksmed.

Access

The Encanyissada lagoon is located next to the village of El Poble Nou del Delta. The most interesting part is the northern half of the lagoon which has has lookouts and an information center for visitors, the Casa de Fusta. You can park in front of the visitor center. Click on the P in the map for directions. From the Casa de Fusta you can explore the area in both directions.

Bird excursion Ebro Delta with bird guide Harold Wijts

My name is Harold Wijts and I am a bird guide in the Ebro Delta, a true bird paradise. Every season there is something to experience. In spring, from March onwards, the migratory birds that come from Africa and spend a few days foraging in the Ebro Delta and then move on to northern Europe, such as spotted crake, whinchat, garganey, all species of swallow, flycatcher. From April, many species of breeding birds return such as purple heron, collared pratincole, little bittern, night heron, squacco heron, many species of terns, golden oriole, bee-eaters, roller, nightjars, short-toed eagle, warblers, stilts. In autumn, migration is reversed from north to south including dotterel and many waders. In winter, there are many winter visitors, such as divers, black-necked grebe, stork, stonechat, scoters, booted eagle, osprey and many species of waders.

Of course also the species that are there all year round such as moustached warbler, audouin's gull, slender-billed gull, egrets, penduline tit, cetti warbler, flamingo, short-toed lark, crested lark, red crested pochard, Kentish plover. The Ebro Delta is a bird paradise with a size of 320 km², created by deposits of the river Ebro.

I'm an experienced bird guide with over 15 years of experience in the Ebro Delta. Prices per half-day session (4-5 hours) € 75.00 for max. 3 persons. + km allowance of € 0.25.
