Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Middelhavs-sølvmåge, Sildemåge and Hættemåge. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Småspove, Stenvender, Sandløber and Mudderklire.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Fjordterne and Rosenterne, but sometimes also Splitterne.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Kuhls Skråpe can be observed. Small numbers of Spidshalet Petrel can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Almindelig skråpe and Lille Skråpe.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Ringnæbbet Måge, Hvidvinget Måge and, in 2011, a Gulkronet Nathejre.
