Small elongated island that is part of Jomfruland National Park. More than 300 species bird species have been spotted on the island.
Jomfruland is a small elongated island located off the coast of mainland Kragerø. It measures about 7.5 km by 1 km. Jomfruland consists mainly of clay, sand, and rock. Boulder beaches dominate much of the island, particularly the outside of it, but there are also forested parts and meadows. The island is known for its rich bird life. Especially bird migration can be spectacular here. Much of the bird migration each spring and autumn follows the coastline and passes by the island's northern peak. Also many rarities have been found on the island. There is also a Bird Station (Jomfruland Fuglestasjon) on the island. It is run by the Telemark chapter of the Norwegian Ornithological Society. From March through November the stations is manned continuously.
There is easy access to Jomfruland by ferry from Kragerø (see the weblink below). You can bring a bicycle on the ferry or rent it at Tårnbrygga.
