Drents-Friese Wold is national park of 61 square kilometers. The Vledder Aa that crosses the forest is one of the oldest original brooks in the Netherlands.
The Drents-Friese Wold is the second largest continuous forest area in the Netherlands. The national park has forests, sand drifts, fens, heather and marsh and stream valleys full of blooming flowers. In the soaked wetland area of Aekingerbroek you are at the origin of the Vledder Aa, which has recently been allowed to flow freely again. The variety in landscape types and the accompanying vegetation results in a varied animal world. This is particularly visible in the birds. Forest birds, meadow birds and marsh birds are found next to each other at a short distance. The diverse landscape has many special birds like Rødrygget Tornskade, Skovsneppe, Vendehals, Natravn, Engsnarre and Hedelærke.

There are two visitor centers, various parking spaces and numerous walks possible. There is also a viewing tower in the area. De walking route you see on the map is 9 km.
