Description
De Ruigte is the habitat of the Highland cattle in the Broekpolder and is approximately 140 hectares in size. It consists of water, open grassland, flower and herb fields and forest. De Ruigte has both wet and dry areas. The large grazers provide variety in De Ruigte. Shrubs, trees and open spaces alternate. Many bird species can be seen close by, it is close to the city and very accessible. The wet parts of the Ruigte are often full of species such as Skestork, Sølvhejre, Lille Lappedykker and Sorthalset Lappedykker. In the winter months you will find birds like Pibeand, Troldand, Spidsand and Krikand. There is a bird viewing screen from where you can admire the birds in the wet area. And if you're very lucky, you'll see or hear a Pirol.

Access
Easily accessible on foot or by bike from the city of Vlaardingen. At the intersections of Aalkeet-Buitenpolderpad with Vlaardingen-Cultuurpad, Steurpad, Brontijdpad and Broekpolderpad you can enter De Ruigte. There are everal parkings available. Click on a P in the map to get directions. When it is busy, it is best to park in the large parking lot at the restaurant Polderpoort.
