Description
The area around Malta International Airport is at its best in spring, particularly with north-west winds. On good days there can be good numbers of harriers, mostly Rørhøg but also Steppehøg (early-mid spring) and Hedehøg (mid-late spring). The site can also be good for Lille Tårnfalk and Aftenfalk (late spring). In practice any migrating species can be seen from the area since it is open, such as flocks of herons, waders, Biæder and Ellekrage. Korttået Lærke arrive in spring and remain to breed in small numbers. Other passerines include hirundines, including Rødrygget Svale, and pipits, including Rødstrubet Piber. In late autumn, the site is also one of the best places in Malta to see Hjejle and Vibe. Several rarities have been seen here over the years.
