Yatsu-higata is an excellent urban tidal mudflat.
Yatsu-Higata is worth visiting when you are in the Tokyo area. You can go there any time of year, but make sure you go there when tide is low (see the link to the tides table below). Optimal time is just when the tide starts coming in.
Take the train to Minami Funabashi and then walk or take a cab. There is a parking lot, but who's driving in Tokyo?
The visitors' center opens rather late (for birdwatchers). However, you can watch the birds even when it is closed. Once inside you pay a small fee and may use the scope and facilities inside the building.
