A small mixed woodland with a network of paths.
In Ballymackessy Woods you can make a pleasant woodland walk with a small river running along its northern edge. Best selection of species can be seen in spring as song makes the birds easier to find. Usual woodland species for Ireland include Skovskade , Træløber , Fuglekonge , Sortmejse and Munk.
Leave the village of Clonroche heading eastwards towards Enniscorthy. After about 1km take an unmarked road to the left (the first left-hand turn). Proceed for about half a kilometre and look for the small car park on your right. The small parking area is suitable for 2 cars only but is often empty.
There are a number of paths crossing the wood. Paths to the left pass through coniferous woodland on a slope down to the small river with deciduous wooded edges, which is not accessible but parts of it can be viewed from the edge of the wood. Higher up is mixed woodland with some scrubby areas. Badgers and red squirrels can also be found in the wood.
