Easily accessible colony of Aftenfalk with observation platform in the Hortobágyi NP area, right along the road 33.
In the treeless landscape of the Puszta with its arid climate this little woodland between Holastó and Debrecen stands out. It is a great place to spot Aftenfalk. The falcons are attracted to the Råge colony that builds its nests in the wood. Aftenfalk do not make a nest themselves. So when the Aftenfalk arrive at the end of April there is a fight for the nests.
A visit can be easily combined with the Holastó fish ponds (also described on Birdingplaces) that are located on the same road.
The woodland is located halfway between Holastó and Debrecen on road 33, at km marker 75. When driving from west to east the place is located on the left. The 33 is the main road through the puszta. A dangerously busy road and you can't easily stop along the road. But luckily the area has a small parking. Press P on the map for directions to the parking and observation platform. The colony is located 100 meters from the P.
