Description
The area of Windknollen - close to the city of Jena - is a small mountain with a mosaic landscape containing mostly semi-dry short grass vegetation, temporarily water-filled depressions, bushes, mixed deciduous forest and isles of pine trees. Once a military training area it is now a little nature reserve (185 ha). Typical birds here are Sanglærke, Hedelærke, Bomlærke, Rødrygget Tornskade and Vestlig Sortstrubet Bynkefugl. You can also easily find Gulspurv, Gråspætte , Sortmejse, Tårnfalk Musvåge and Rød Glente.

You can access Windknollen only on foot from different directions, for example from the village of Closewitz or through Steingrund.
