Beech forest, pine forest, the lake Madlower Badesee and the river Spree make for a lovely stroll with some good urban birding.
The Volkspark, Madlower Schluchten & Eichpark in Cottbus is an area with a mix of deciduous forest and pine trees plus a river and a lake. So there's a number of different habitats in a small geographical area. In summer, there are different warblers and flycatchers and in winter woodpeckers, tits and birds of prey stand out. Especially the path along the river is always good for a surprise, my biggest one being a Hvidøjet And.
Access for public transport: take tram 3 to the stop 'Südfriedhof'. Cross the cemetery and then turn right. Follow either the bigger path to the lake or take any path through the forest. By car: parking is on the eastern side of the cemetery 'Südfriedhof' or near Markgrafenmühle. There are signposts to 'Madlower Schluchten', Madlower Badesee and the cycle paths along the river Spree. Walking or cycling is both possible. Dogs on the lead, please. Some paths are paved and accessible for wheelchair, but not all.
