Mixed forest good for looking for woodpeckers and other forest birds.
The public forest (Staatsforst) Rheurdt / Littard is a forest that for large parts uses natural forest management, e.g. old and fallen trees are not removed. This is a perfect habitat for different species of woodpeckers, such as Sortspætte, Stor Flagspætte, Mellemflagspætte, Lille Flagspætte and Grønspætte. Also many other forest birds sing and breed here. There are several ponds around the forest, which show some waterfowl and also Isfugl.
You can park the car park in the southern part of the forest. There are several routes possible through the forest. The 6 km circular route on the map is just a suggestion. Many routes get really muddy during wet weather, especially in winter. In most areas of the forest you have to stay on the paths to protect nature.
Whilst you can find birds all year round, the best time is early spring, when wintering birds get active, migrating birds return and the foliage is not too thick yet to watch.
