Description
The Pohnsdorfer Stauung is a favorite birding place close to Kiel that is always worth a visit. After the moors were ditched and dried in the the 1950s most of the biodiversity was lost, the subsequent renaturation in the 1990s, while not restoring the moors created large wetlands and reedbeds inhabited by diverse waterfowl, waders and rails as well as reed inhabiting passarines. Wintering geese and ducks can be found in high numbers during the cold month. Its always worth sitting down close to the reeds and listen for Vandrikse and the occasional Plettet Rørvagtel.
