Nature reserve with grassland, wet meadows and a lake. The Kuhlenvenn is an important area for water, wading and meadow birds.
The Kuhlenvenn is a 67 hectare nature reserve and a remnant of the Weißen Venns (White Fens), the largest moorland area in Westphalia. No remains of the former raised bog have been preserved. But the Kuhlenvenn was redeveloped into a nature reserve and nowadays consists of extensively used grassland, wet meadows and a lake. The Kuhlenvenn is an important reserve for water, wading and meadow birds which use the area for breeding, foraging, resting or wintering. Among the birds you can encounter are Storspove, Vibe, Skarv, Stor Kobbersneppe, Strandskade, Gul Vipstjert, Rødrygget Tornskade, Vestlig Sortstrubet Bynkefugl and Lille Lappedykker.
A footpath leads past the lake from east to west across the nature reserve. The area also has a bird hide. Click on the P in the map for directions.
